Good news! The Wildlife Garden is now well and truly open! The pond has been dug, paths have been created, benches and seating are in position, and – most importantly – wildflower seed mix, bird boxes and insect hotels have all made the area conducive to wildlife habitation.
We could not be more pleased with how successful the Garden has been in its first few months. To see people of all ages – but especially young children – enjoying watching the various flora and fauna move in to Ellington Park has been a joy to see. And it is all down to the generosity of the people of Ramsgate – and beyond – who voted in their thousands for the project, against stiff opposition, in the ITV People’s Millions Competition.
The Wildlife Garden was officially opened by the Leader of Thanet District Council, Cllr Iris Johnston, on Saturday 11th April. We had anticipated a few people turning up for the occasion and had volunteers at the ready to provide guided tours. In the end, though, many hundreds turned up and had a look for themselves!
Local schools regularly conduct outdoor lessons in the Wildlife Garden – pupils with clipboards identifying the birds, insects, pond life and plants is not an unusual sight. We even have a Storyteller’s Throne, which, on weekdays is where teacher can conduct lessons from, and on some weekends we hold Children’s Storytelling (see below).
Do come along and enjoy the beauty and the peace and quietude of the Wildlife Garden. Ellington Park looks forward to welcoming you soon.
